The knowledge of the customer is getting even more complicated in today’s fierce business environment. While demographic data like gender, location, age, and income still offer important background information, these data alone do not provide enough insight into consumers’ purchasing behavior. Modern buyers are driven by their personal values, lives, motivations, aspirations, interests, attitudes, and emotional drivers, which can’t be captured using demographics alone. With changing buyer expectations, these organizations have to create customer personas to understand who their buyers are and what motivates them.

Psychographic analysis provides a more in-depth insight, which makes it possible for businesses to craft their messaging, products, and experiences in a more meaningful way. A lot of companies that team up with a brand strategy firm understand the advantages of blending their demographics with their psychographics for better positioning, communication, and strategic planning. Modern buyer personas are dynamic personas that are composed of measurable characteristics and consumer behavior that is influenced by their motivations.

5 Ways to Build Better Buyer Personas with Consumer Psychographics

  1. Combine Generational Research with Psychographic Analysis

Generational research is helpful for understanding the attitudes and behaviors of the mass of consumers, as well as their experiences of historical events, technological uptake, culture, and social norms. But, within the same generation, people have different priorities, motivations to buy, and preferences for lifestyle.

By combining generational and psychographic data, a more rounded, full picture of audience behavior can be depicted. Instead of trying to cluster together all the people in an age group and assuming that they are similar, a company can look at differing values, future aspirations, interests, and decision-making styles among consumers in the group to identify the different segments.

By combining these two, buyer personas can be created more accurately to reflect actual in-the-real-world behavior, enabling organizations to build communication strategies that appeal to different audience groups.

  1. Identify the Motivations Behind Purchasing Decisions

People don’t make purchase decisions based just on the facts. But emotions such as trust, status, convenience, sustainability, security, achievement, belonging, and innovation are also significant drivers in the consumer decision-making process.

Psychography is about identifying these deeper motives through surveys and interviews, behavioral research, customer feedback, online communities, and market observation. It’s much more useful to know a customer’s decision-making process than just what he buys.

By creating buyer personas based on motivations, businesses can have a strategy for communicating benefits that meet customer priorities instead of just product features or technical specs.

  1. Segment Audiences According to Shared Values

The modern audience that comes together may be based upon shared views and attitudes, not necessarily shared demographics. Those who look out for the environment and prioritize high quality, affordability, technological innovation, health, and community may fall into very different categories, but share very similar buying habits.

The psychographic segmentation assumes that customers can be divided based on the values and lifestyles that they share and provides the opportunity to create messaging that is truly aligned with customer priorities. This helps them get more involved, as communication is directed toward principles that impact everyday decisions.

Another advantage of value-driven segmentation is that the organization can better recognize new communities of customers, which are not identifiable only on the basis of demographics.

  1. Draw Lifestyles and Patterns of Customers

Buyer personas really shine when they are based on how your customers live, work, and engage with your product or service. The psychographics are embedded in daily life, hobbies, media habits, digital behaviors, buying frequency, communication preferences, and lifestyle preferences, all of which are valuable.

Deconstructing these behavioral trends enables businesses to gain insights into the timing of customer decisions, the sources of customer information, and factors that affect their buying journey. This overall knowledge helps create a better marketing strategy, customer experience, and content.

Lifestyle-based personas can also enable organizations to predict changes in customer expectations as their behaviors evolve over time.

  1. Continuously Update Personas Using New Customer Insights

Economic conditions, technological advances, cultural changes, and variations in social values are all factors that tend to influence consumers at all times. Buyer personas should be an ongoing, market-adaptive document rather than a static, single-profile entity that changes only infrequently.

By examining customer comments, behavioral data, market research, social listening, purchase patterns, and industry trends, organizations can see meaningful shifts in audience attitudes and motivations, like an X-ray of the customer’s mind.

Customer feedback, behavioral analytics, market research, social listening, purchase trends, and industry insights all allow organizations to see meaningful changes in audience attitudes and motivations, like an X-ray of the customer’s mind.

Continual refinement allows psychographic profiles to be relevant and to help guide strategic decisions with regard to the reality of customers, instead of their assumptions.

End Point

Today’s buyer personas are much more than a demographic description—they now include the motivations, values, lifestyles, and behaviors that help identify consumers. Emotional drivers, value-based segmentation, lifestyle analysis, and ongoing refinement are just some ways psychographic research can give a deeper understanding of shifting audiences. Companies that develop personas based on these insights are more likely to design relevant user journeys and stay relevant in the ever-changing marketplace.
